Rivers and Lakes of Kamchatka
There are more than 14 thousand rivers and streams in Kamchatka. The largest river is Kamchatka (760 km).

The fish population of these reservoirs is numerous and unique. The most of species of fishes reach large size. All this in the combination with unique natural conditions and scarcely populated area makes Kamchatka a very attractive site for fishing. There are more than 100 thousand big and small lakes of different types on Kamchatka, each of them is unique. The deep-water lakes Kuril and Karimskoe of volcanic origin are amazing in its beauty. We tell you about Palanskoe lake. It is located in the north of Kamchatka in downhills of the western part of Sredinny range at height of 275 meters above sea level. The area of lake is 28,35 km 2. The maximal depth is 28 m. The average depth is 14,8 m. Temperature of water in the summer is 11 - 13 degrees. Landscapes surrounding this reservoir are extremely various, You can see here elfin cedar deserts, forests of stone birch, high-mountainous deserts and glaciers. There are natural outputs of thermal waters. Here is one of the most beautiful places on all Kamchatka. In the river Palana is possible to catch different species of Pacific salmon: sockeye, Kamchatka steelhead, white-spotted char, coho, Dolly Varden char.
Landscapes surrounding Kamchatka rivers are unusually beautiful and various enough. In the south and the central part of peninsula you’ll meet poplars, alders, chosenia and ash trees. Erman’s birch tree, also called “a stone birch” is the most widely distributed tree in Kamchatka’s forests. In their bottom circle prevails high grass as if competing among themselves to last on height of 2-3 meters. More closer to mountains the shape of these woods varies, it becomes less often. The bushes of ash, willow, honeysuckle and fern are appeared. More closer to the sea stone birch forests are broken to small forests and pass in forest-tundra and tundra. Trees here are undersized. Their trunks are bent. Elfin cedar deserve growth between the birches.
